Welcome to the week 9 edition of the FINSOC Finance Report. After a two-week publication break over Easter, we hope that you are all eager for your weekly update on financial news and market events! Coinciding with the return to semester, this week’s issue will fill you in on all the major developments in financial markets which occurred over the Easter break. No doubt the surge of the Australian dollar and a flurry of deals including the interloper appearance of Barrick Gold’s bid for Equinox which outbid rival Minmetals Resources makes for an interesting read! Welcome to Week 6 of the FINSOC Finance Report!
Apologies for the delay in circulation, but we look forward to delivering you the FFR at the usual start of week from week 7 going forward.
Remember that the FFR provides valuable information each week about movements in financial markets! Think of each issue as a set of pointers designed to get you as a student to inquire further and acquire a deeper understanding where your interests lie. This is our goal each week!
As assessments pile on, FINSOC will be taking a break from the usual event schedule. Keep an eye out for FINSOC notices though!
Regards,
Edward Deng (Vice President)/Sarah Li (Publications Director)

Welcome to week 4 of the FFR! Financial news around the world this week has been dominated by the developments in Japan following the devastating earthquakes. This comes as no surprise as world markets react to the situation and assist in the major re-covery project that lies ahead. Coverage in our report this week will therefore centre upon the developments in Japan.
This week we are proud to be hosting the annual FinExpo on Monday 21st March 2011 at the New Law School Glass Room Foyer! Firms in attendance include Goldman Sachs, Deustche Bank and Oliver Wyman so make sure to attend!

As we move into the second week of semester, things are really beginning to take shape for students as well as our economy following a few months of disasters. For business students, it is a difficult ask to keep up with finance news on a weekly basis but it is invaluable when it comes to fortifying your practical knowledge for industry. So make the most of our publication and let it be a source of inspiration to make you enquire further into each headline.
For those who attended, we hope you enjoyed the excellent economic lecture delivered by Warren Hogan. Find our recap of his lecture on page 3! This week, keep an eye out for Tuesday 8th March at 6pm in the New Law School Seminar Room 106 where John Weber, Chief Executive Partner (i.e. CEO) of Minter Ellison will be guest lecturing to FINSOC members.
